QUOTE

"For the Celts, the world is always latently and actively spiritual. The depth of this interflow is also apparent in the power of language in the Celtic world. Language itself had power to cause events and divine events yet to happen. Chants and spells could actually reverse a whole course of negative destiny and bring forth something new and good."

- from Anam Cara by John O'Donohue

GUIDING REFLECTION

"Witching is a practice of engaging the essential, natural world with magic and supernatural intentions. Throughout history there have been many names for witches...including shamanism, sorcery, healing, herbalism, midwifery and doula labor, conjuring, rootwork, ritual and spellcasting...

This act of witching is about putting our attention behind our intentions. And being willing to invite and shape the unseen forces of the world (which go by many names and beyond all comprehensible names) to align with the highest good for ourselves and the whole...

I use my witching for liberation."

-from Fables and Spells by adrienne maree brown

A RITUAL FOR LIBERATION

Cast a spell.

Write it into liberation.

Speak or sing it into manifestation.

Freewrite on the following prompts

(write whatever comes to your mind for a few minutes without stopping):

We will be free...I release:

We will be free...I call in:

We will be free...I envision:

Circle one line from your writing

Write it on a new small piece of paper

Place the words next to a candle

Place a meaningful object beside it

Make a small altar to honor these words

Speak the words, again and again

Create a movement / gesture with and for the words

Sing the words

Rest.

Watch your candle.

Come back to this altar when you feel called to.

Remember:

"Chants and spells [can] actually reverse a whole course of negative destiny and bring forth something new and good." - John O'Donohue

MY JOURNEY

‘My journey’ shares some of my practice creating sacred space in my everyday life. In sharing aspects of my intimate, inner world, my hope is to support you in connecting with the vulnerable, sometimes hidden spaces within your own being.

**

II just got back from 10 days in residency at the Arab American National Museum (AANM), where I was / am part of a collaborative team developing: The Magic Bullet. I am so grateful for this time & space & community, amidst immense grief, rage and horror at the continued genocide in Palestine.

I was there with my daughter, in partnership with community, within beautifully crafted structures of collective care crafted by Lubdub Theatre, in the city of Dearborn, which is home to an incredible Arab and SWANA diasporic community.

Some of my experiences on this powerful journey involved: spells and spirits, intersecting histories of the 'crossroads', decolonizing creative practice, the colonizer and colonized within, letting go, ‘The Land in our Bones’, pressure, release, the Mediterranean, The Djurdjura mountains. Algerian mystics & resistance fighters Lalla Fatma N'Soumer and Emir Abdelkader. Houdin and the French colonial government's 'Bureau of Arab Affairs'. Violent Modernity.

Sitting with and researching the same settler colonial violence & strategies that were used by the French in Algeria, now being used by Israel in Palestine.

This process was and continues to be deeply meaningful for me on a personal level, and as part of the movement for collective liberation.

While our material for The Magic Bullet is created in collaboration, we also delve into our own personal impulses and creations, which serve our collective vision. In the dream world & in research, in creative writing and decolonial practice: I continue to spend time with Lalla Fatma N'Soumer: one of the major heroines of Algerian resistance to the French colonial enterprise in the region of Kabylia. Below is a poem & creative exploration that shares some insight into my intentions and practice of "writing it into liberation."

Calling in Lalla

Which is your tongue Lalla?

What are the sounds to look for?

I keep listening.

You come to me in dreams.

Rivers and prayers for Palestine.

In rhythms and songs.

There was a moment:

When I craved to create you as the heroine.

The strongest one.

The fighter & believer

Without fault.

But I don't want to claim you.

Or mould you into my needs.

Or make you into some false perfection or truth.

To try and prove something. Or show something. Or be something.

I want to allow what comes...to come.

As best as I know how.

I will prepare myself, so that I am ready & listening.

Resting in my own complex humanity for a moment.

And in that release:

I sing you a song.

And I dance with you in words and images.

Across space and time

Colonizer and colonized inside me.

Looking to be free.

I imagine: your doubts, your fears, your longing.

Resting in your mother’s arms. Standing beside your Djurdjura sisters. Speaking the Suras with your brothers.

They say you has visions

That you say it was written

This.

Suffocating violence.

The occupying brutal violence.

Impossible to hold. And yet held.

In and on and of the mountains.

Your sacred life.

We are of you.

Writing it into liberation.

You transforming us into freedom.

In and on and of the mountains.

SPOTLIGHT

THE LAND IN OUR BONES: Plantcestral Herbalism and Healing Cultures from Syria to the Sinai--Earth-Based Pathways to Ancestral Stewardship and Belonging in the Diaspora. By Layla K. Feghali

A profound and searching exploration of the herbs and land-based medicines of Lebanon and Cana’an—a vital invitation to re-member our roots and deepen relationship with the lands where we live in diaspora

Tying cultural survival to earth-based knowledge, Lebanese ethnobotanist, sovereignty steward, and cultural worker Layla K. Feghali offers a layered history of the healing plants of Cana’an (the Levant) and the Crossroads (“Middle East”) and asks into the ways we become free from the wounds of colonization and displacement.

In the first session, Noelle will lead the participants in a creative ceremony. Through embodied jam sessions & meditative installations, sonic experiences of sacred time & storytelling: we unearth connection to intangible parts of ourselves and our ancestral lineages. This will be an embodied experience of ritual-performance gathering in community. In the second workshop, participants will create and facilitate their own creative, community-centered, performance rituals: continuing to explore themes of ancestry.
