reflections

What does humbleness feel like in your body? In your spirit?

What does practicing humility look like in your day-to-day life?

'be humility'

creative ritual

Take a moment to rest in a space that feels sacred to you. Bring a pen and notebook.

If inspired, listen to this short talk & meditation on "the wisdom of humility" from Tara Brach.

**

As you sit, notice your surroundings: what sounds catch your ear? what sights catch your eye? What smells emerge?

Imagine their story or experience (for example - the story & experience of the light on the bark of the tree, or the wind on your neck etc.). Write a story, a poem or a freewrite from the perspective of this being. If supportive, you can use the following prompt:

I am here...

**

What messages were offered to you?

May we learn to see and listen to the experiences of all beings. May this serve our practice of humility and feeling of sacred connection.

my journey

‘My journey’ shares some of my practice creating sacred space in my everyday life. In sharing aspects of my intimate, inner world, my hope is to support you in connecting with the vulnerable, sometimes hidden spaces within your own being.

**

Earlier this summer, I was walking in the woods with my husband and daughter, Lila. We stopped every few steps while Lila would call out 'oh wooow!' with great wonder, as she explored the leaves, roots & insects on the forest floor.

About an hour in, I felt an impulse to place my forehead to the forest floor. My husband laughed and lovingly joked with me when I stopped to do this, as he and Lila continued. I stopped & kneeled with my forehead to the earth for quite some time. Roots and messages. Soil connectivity. Webs of intricate design. Light and darkness. Underneath and in between.

be humility was the message I received.

This was not the first time I was received this teaching. An unraveling of a certain thread of pride that lives in the fabric of my being, a reminder that I am not above, below or apart from anyone or any being. I felt like I was truly able to tune in and listen with the forest, even if just for a moment.

Over the past years, I have been inspired when learning with master healers who embody profound humility. I am very much a student in this journey, so what a gift to learn from such wise teachers! Like Maestra Ynes of Niwe Rao Xobo and Josh Wolk from 5 lines Feldenkreis.

I experience these master healers' humility as a quiet power. A discipline & dedication to their craft. No need to boast, or prove or show. Instead it feels like a trust in their role in the great web of life, a trust that their work and and aligned being will serve life & light itself.

**

I often do prostrations before I sit in meditation. In the Yungdrung Bon tradition which I practice, there is both a reaching to the sky and bringing of one's forehead to the floor.

When I lay my head to the ground, I bring my body and mind back to earth, to remember to surrender, to move on cosmic and earth time, to tend to the ecosystems of which I am a part and to tend to my own gifts, with a care that is not expectant but rather filled with trust. A reminder not to prove or show or perform anything to fluff my sense of worth, but rather to exist as I am, a small, intricate light in the sacred fire of aliveness of which we are all a part.

This doesn't take away from my power, worthiness or my ability to take action, but encourages me to move with greater care, curiosity & attentiveness to each moment, even when experiencing the immense urgency of the multiple and connected crises of our times.

May the practice of humility be welcomed into our movements, into the fabric of our days and into the breath of our bodies. May it serve us in building new worlds and systems of collective care.

**

As we continue on this journey of practicing humility together, I would love to hear from YOU about what humility means to you: how you practice, experience and reflect on humility in your life, world & ecosystems!

I was very moved by the humility, tenderness & vulnerability in this conversation "Healing from Zionism". A beautiful insight into the healing journey of Meital and their work & vision supporting Palestinian & collective liberation.

"Meital describes themself as a “death laborer tending to a prayer for the liberation of the land of Palestine” and has recently written the book Bloodlines which traces their paternal lineage being survivors of the Holocaust and subsequently migrating to Palestine. In this podcast Meital describes their refusal to serve in the IDF and their subsequent departure from Israel and development into a death doula for Zionism."
